In Alabama, Georgia, and Florida (the states in our public radio coverage area), according to the University of North Carolina School of Journalism and Media, there is a marked decline in the publishing of newspapers, especially in rural areas. Chuck Holmes, an award-winning journalist who now heads the Alabama Humanities Alliance, talks with Carolyn Hutcheson, host of In Focus, about that decline. The Democracy and the Informed Citizen initiative of the Alabama Humanities Alliance is exploring solutions that will make local news available to rural citizens in Alabama.
