Frye Gaillard, co-author of the book, “The Slave Who Went to Congress,” talked with Carolyn Hutcheson, host of In Focus, about the legacy of Reconstruction-era Congressman Benjamin Sterling Turner, who was elected to Congress in 1870, encouraged to run by both blacks and whites in Selma, AL.<\/p>\n

Juneteenth, June 19, 1865, ushered in the country’s push for
African American freedom and equality. Twenty years ago, the citizens of Selma together erected a statue of Turner in Old Live Oak Cemetery.<\/p>\n
