TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION<\/a>) \u2014 The Troy Resilience Project<\/a> is working to provide extra support and education during National Child Abuse Prevention Month<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over 26,000 cases of child mistreatment\u00a0are reported\u00a0in Alabama\u00a0annually,\u00a0according to the 2025 Alabama Kids Count Databook<\/a>.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0the real people behind those numbers that are spurring the\u00a0Troy Resilience Project<\/a> to shine\u00a0light on the less-recognized abusive environments.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although some people may consider child abuse as physical or sexual\u00a0violence,\u00a0according to TRP\u2019s Executive Director Maggie Doss,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0much deeper than that.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMaybe [they’re] a parent who doesn’t have all of the means necessary to work a job where they might have to leave their children home alone,” Doss said. “They might struggle to have the knowledge on how to parent their child properly or they don\u2019t have a way to get their child to the doctor, and things like that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Here at TRP, we work to prevent those things by trying to make sure families have all the resources they need.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although these things may not be intentional, they fall under the category of child neglect. TRP tries to prevent those situations by providing basic necessity resources (food, clothing, hygiene products, etc.) through their care closet, home visit services, school-based mental health help, trauma-informed counseling, and worksforce development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s important to note that you don\u2019t have to be a social worker like the people at TRP to help. People from all walks of life can and are encouraged to help, as these services benefit the entire community, not just the families directly affected. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It’s a real, tangible way to be invested in the community in making a difference in the lives of kids and families,” Doss said. “It\u2019s community focused investment and it’s making our community a better place.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
