TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION<\/a>) \u2014 The Masters of the Midweek did it again. Troy softball<\/a> shut out Auburn at home to get its first win since 2012 against the Tigers, 2-0. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In front of a record-setting crowd, Troy scored early and never let up, limiting Auburn to only three hits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ella Cunningham was essential to the Trojans’ performance, recording five strikeouts on the night. The sophomore pitcher said her motivation for the performance was those in the Troy crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I was just thinking ‘you gotta push really hard, your team needs this, and the little girls in the stands are here to watch you,” said Cunningham. “They want you to succeed more than anything.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Troy scored quick with two unearned runs in the first two innings, with errors helping the Trojans cross home plate. The game would come down to mistakes made, and Troy would play a tighter game than the Tigers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Auburn would leave 12 runners on base throughout the contest, including leaving bases loaded in both the 1st and 5th innings, as well as leaving five runners on third base. The Trojans were able to shut the Tigers out from scoring while threatening, something head coach Eric Newell<\/a> commended his team on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I don’t know how many runners Auburn left on base, but tonight was about us and for us shutting the door down.” said Newell. “Auburn didn’t do what they needed to do with runners in scoring position, and we did what we needed to do to kinda keep it secure.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Troy now improves to 9-0 in midweek matchups, ending the season undefeated in that regard for the first time in school history. Although Newell was happy about that record-breaking moment, with two series left, he would like to see the Trojans carry their midweek success to the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I guess that’s glass half full, glass half empty is that we need to win some weekend games against those conference opponents,” said Newell. “It’s a cool thing that midweek, we show up and show out, but now it’s time to show up and show out on the weekend as well.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the win, the Trojans got their first shut out over a Power 4 team since Ohio State in 2022 and their first shut out against Auburn ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The attendance for that matchup was 1,623, the seventh-most in program history, as well as the most attended win in program history. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
