(<a href=\"https:\/\/today.troy.edu\/trojanvision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TROJANVISION<\/a>) \u2014 On\u00a0Thursday and Friday, Troy\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.troy.edu\/academics\/colleges-schools\/college-arts-humanities\/departments\/john-m-long-school-music\/#ensembles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">John M. Long School of Music<\/a> collaborated with Ilium Records to host the Business, Production and Music Expo, better known as \u201cBPM.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Troy University students and Pike County high school students joined forces for the two-day\u00a0expo\u00a0working toward one shared goal: creating and performing an original song. By the end of the clinic, that goal became a reality with \u201cOn My Own,\u201d performed live Friday night.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We started this song from scratch,&#8221; said Chase Dawson, a senior interdisciplinary studies major from Phoenix, Arizona, and fiddler for POPulus. &#8220;We put together a melody and we wrote the lyrics.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was an amazing experience putting it all together.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Christian Pate&nbsp;is a&nbsp;freshman&nbsp;music education major&nbsp;from&nbsp;Andalusia,&nbsp;Alabama,&nbsp;and a vocalist in&nbsp;POPulus. Pate had background and harmony parts on \u201cOn My Own\u201d and said his first BPM experience&nbsp;was one to&nbsp;remember.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJumping into something new is always a little scary, but I came in with high expectations, and it didn\u2019t disappoint,\u201d Pate said.&nbsp;\u201cEven though we&nbsp;didn\u2019t&nbsp;have a lot of time to put the song together, it was fun and&nbsp;wasn\u2019t&nbsp;too difficult.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/today.troy.edu\/trojanvision\/2026\/03\/12\/populus-embraces-smaller-space-offers-more-intimate-performance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>MORE FOR YOU: POPulus embraces \u2018smaller space,\u2019 offers more intimate performance<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through breakout sessions, songwriting workshops and live performances, students explored careers in the music industry while learning from Grammy-winning and nominated professionals, including guitarist Kevin Enstrom, music industry expert Matt&nbsp;Fulton&nbsp;and producer and engineer Tom Kahre.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt surprised&nbsp;me how receptive everyone has been,\u201d Kahre said. \u201cIn these situations, you never know what the student&#8217;s energy level and interest in anything we have to say will be.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEveryone has been really engaged and&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;been fun.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Chandler Bridges, Associate Professor and Coordinator of Troy\u2019s Music Industry Program, said the expo helped students connect what&nbsp;they\u2019ve&nbsp;learned in the classroom to real-world experience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt connects what they\u2019ve been&nbsp;learning with&nbsp;actually doing,\u201d Bridges said. \u201cThe big idea is fundamentals make sense and some of the rules make sense, but until you&nbsp;actually practice&nbsp;it,&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;hard to understand how it all fits together.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is an opportunity for them to see how their learning fits into practice in the real world.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The release date for \u201cOn My Own\u201d has yet to be announced but is expected to be released sometime in May.\u00a0Students can visit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/populusband\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">@populusband<\/a> on Instagram for more information.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TROY, Ala.
