TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION<\/a>) \u2014 Students in the Hall School of Journalism and Communication<\/a> now have a better understanding of investigative reporting after meeting an\u00a0award-winning investigative reporter.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0M. Stanton Evans\u00a0Journalism\u00a0Symposium\u00a0is an annual event\u00a0inside\u00a0the\u00a0Hall School of Journalism and Communication. This year, students\u00a0received career and life advice from National Public Radio<\/a> and Washington Post<\/a>\u00a0investigative correspondent, Cheryl W. Thompson<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think it gives them a sort of real glimpse into journalism,” Thompson said. “You know, we live this every day and so the information that I\u2019m giving and the advice that I\u2019m sharing is lived. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It\u2019s\u00a0not something that I wish would happen, no, no, been there, done that.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Been there and done that, Thomas has. One audience member was keen to hear about her time as a White House correspondent for the Washington Post. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not every day that you get to meet someone that was a correspondent for the Obama administration,” said communications student, Jamey Shepard. “As someone that looks up to him as a president, I very much enjoyed everything that she had to say.”<\/p>\n\n\n

In addition to hearing Thompson\u2019s stories, Shepard says he also enjoyed getting a true look into the industry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI feel like some students need more motivation or inspiration,” Shepard said. “Something that will make them truly explore what the opportunities are out there. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Also, I want to just take a deeper dive into what’s in store for their future and what they can accomplish.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thompson covered many topics, ranging from establishing sources to finding corruption in state offices. Her biggest goal though, was showcasing the importance of uncovering the truth through investigative journalism. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c[It’s important] knowing that my words, my reporting, my writing, can hold people accountable,” Thompson said. “It matters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Can you imagine if there wasn\u2019t accountability journalism what this country would be like with nobody to hold them accountable?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the keynote address, students had the chance to get a signed version of Thompson\u2019s book, \u201cForgotten Souls<\/a>.\u201d A small group of less than 10 students met with her afterward for a more personal conversation about the industry. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
