(<a href=\"https:\/\/today.troy.edu\/trojanvision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TROJANVISION<\/a>)\u00a0\u2014 Over the weekend, Troy University held Alabama&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.specialolympics.org\/programs\/united-states\/alabama\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2026 Special Olympics<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the event, Olympians competed in a number of games ranging from track and shot put to javelin throwing and bowling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One major theme among participants, volunteers and families alike was community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I love how the communities come together,&#8221; said Kerry Wilson, a volunteer for the 2026 Alabama Special Olympics. &#8220;Being in the Airforce, community is a big part of our culture, so it&#8217;s really great to see that in the local community here in Alabama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I know that everybody who is coming together today, regardless of the outcome, have all just worked very hard. I just love seeing them cheer each other on.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/today.troy.edu\/trojanvision\/2026\/05\/28\/chancellor-hawkins-earns-prestigious-honor-from-local-exchange-club\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>COMMUNITY COVERAGE: Chancellor Hawkins earns prestigious honor from local Exchange Club<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Keenen Porter, known affectionately as Coach Keke, the 2026 Special Olympics marked his first time coaching and volunteering for the games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Man, it&#8217;s been nothing but breathtaking,&#8221; Porter said. &#8220;Seeing these kids&#8217; energy and how excited they are to compete &#8211; there&#8217;s nothing better to see than this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It&#8217;s bringing everyone together, the outside world as well as the special needs. It&#8217;s making everybody be able to see this on a bigger picture, a bigger platform.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tyler Smith is a Special Olympian from Mobile, Alabama who competed in javelin and shot put. He said seeing people come to Troy for the games was motivating and exciting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Oh yeah, it&#8217;s a lot of fun, I love doing this,&#8221; Smith said. &#8220;Just seeing everybody from the whole state of Alabama and cheering for them. Even my teammates from Mobile and cheering them on, and everybody did good!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the end of the day, everyone went home with medals, memories and a reminder that the Special Olympics are more than just a game.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TROY, Ala.
