TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION<\/a>) \u2014 How can medical professionals make sure trauma care stays consistent? That question was answered at the Wiregrass Trauma Team Conference held on Troy’s campus Friday, June 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The goal is to connect individuals within the trauma community and provide them with a continuing education opportunity,” stated AHEC community outreach coordinator of the student leadership team, Ian Perdue. “We have several presenters that are going to talk about different changes within trauma care and there’s several hands on activities where they can practice different skills.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skills stations provided hands-on techniques on intubation, chest tube placement, and suturing. Having attendees try hands-on techniques taught them to stay on the same page when performing care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It’s very important that as algorithms, medications, and techniques change and are updated, the community stays informed about those changes,” Perdue explained. “Having that knowledge to spread that with other members of the community and making sure that one is practicing a standard of care that is appropriate and acceptable, as well.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Learning new skills allows medical professionals to update the level of care they can provide to their patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Evidence based practice changes all the time,” said Ginger Thomas, emergency director of Flowers Hospitals. “We’ll learn something new, do some more research, dive into situations with particular subjects that we didn’t realize we needed to be involved in and so we’ll start looking in to and diving deeper into those. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“When we do that we start to learn more things.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
