(<a href=\"https:\/\/today.troy.edu\/TROJANVISION\">TROJANVISION<\/a>) \u2014 A once-segregated high school in Troy that shut down in 1970 reopened Wednesday as a\u00a0dual enrollment center and\u00a0career technical school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before it closed in 1971 and was integrated into Charles Henderson High School, Academy Street High School was a segregated school for Black students only. Now,\u00a0in its reinvention 56 years later,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/profile.php?id=61592050284935\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Academy\u00a0Street Career Innovation Center<\/a> aims to\u00a0prepare all students for life in the workforce.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen the students are&nbsp;here&nbsp;we refer to them as employees,&#8221; said Principal Casey Moore. &#8220;We give them the opportunity to serve in management roles as well as staff roles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;They&nbsp;actually serve&nbsp;as supervisors in the program they serve as IT managers, public relations directors, so these are their programs.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/today.troy.edu\/trojanvision\/2025\/07\/08\/historic-academy-street-high-school-reopens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>LOOKING BACK: Historic Academy Street High School reopens<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Technical skills&nbsp;aren\u2019t&nbsp;the&nbsp;only&nbsp;element that students need to be prepared for. Academy Street also&nbsp;works&nbsp;to&nbsp;develop students\u2019 soft skills like communication and problem solving.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe also have our&nbsp;aspire program which is a partnership with our local industries and community members where they come in and teach soft skills each&nbsp;Friday&nbsp;to our&nbsp;students making sure they&nbsp;have&nbsp;the technical skills they need but also the&nbsp;employability skills they need to be successful,\u201d&nbsp;Moore said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Career Innovation Center provides programs in mechatronics, electrical line work, computer science, aerospace\u00a0engineering\u00a0and public safety, which are broken into EMS fire safety and patrolling.\u00a0But,\u00a0even\u00a0students pursuing other fields can use the programs to their advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI plan to be an attorney when I get older and graduate and this helps me know what can be done right and wrong,\u201d said sophomore EMS student, Samyria Williams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For&nbsp;some&nbsp;students planning to enter the fields they study at Academy Street, they say being the first generation of the school&#8217;s new era provides them motivation in completing their studies and moving to the working world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt makes me feel special,&nbsp;especially,&#8221; said sophomore mechatronics student, Daniel Burdick. &#8220;Going to this school gives me a bunch of great opportunities and gives me a ton of ways to get a head start in real life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know a lot of people before me&nbsp;didn\u2019t&nbsp;have this opportunity,&#8221; said sophomore electrical line work student, Massai Aucy. &#8220;This program just begun so I feel good to be one of the first to do it.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students become\u00a0eligible\u00a0in their sophomore year, allowing them to get two\u00a0certifications.\u00a0The school will hold a ribbon cutting for its reopening and\u00a0the renovation\u00a0of its gym later this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TROY, Ala.
