TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Basketball season is right around the corner, but before the women’s basketball team tips off its season, the Trojans welcomed fans into Trojan Arena for a night of fun.

The third annual Basketball and Brushes is in the books. Tuesday night, fans poured into the arena to get the chance to paint with members of the women’s basketball team

“This event started three years ago as a friends-raiser and it’s just such a unique experience to get to sit at a table, paint, share a drink, share your meal, maybe get up in line dance, and it’s turned into a fundraiser as well, but it is a friends raiser,” said head coach Chanda Rigby. “It’s a very unique night that we get to share between our fans and players.”

Fans learned about the players on the team, as Troy brought in 12 new players in the offseason.

“We have so many new faces,” Rigby said. “If this were last year’s team, it would have been like old friends at an event together, but tonight, it was like a meet and greet and let’s get to know each other.

“We had players sit at each table with a group of six fans. They painted together, and painting bonds you together and so they did.”

For some fans, the night allowed them to show support for the Trojans and let them see who will be cheering them on from the stands.

“I think it helps them have higher morale whenever they see people in the stands versus not as many people coming,” said attendee Angel Parrish. “I graduated from Charles Henderson; I graduated from Troy University, so I want to make sure I’m doing my part to support them as an alumna.”

Along with food and drinks, there were door prizes donated from local businesses. Some set up tables along the edges of the events, giving Trojan fans to see what they have to offer.

“I tell people all the time ‘Let’s buy local. Let’s buy here in Troy,’ and so many people here are just amazed at some of the products they have back there,” Rigby said. “It raises awareness of the good shopping we have enjoyed and how they support Troy Trojans.

“There’s a lot of Trojan gear back there for sale. Student -Made Troy, our students, brought a lot of things that they make out here to sell, and it’s just a good night all the way around.”

After what some called a great turnout, Rigby said the team is looking to expand the event for next year.

“For the fourth annual, we feel like if this is growing and growing and we feel like we can move the curtains back back there we we cut the the arena in half so it doesn’t look so big but we feel like next year we’re just going to be able to push the curtains back or not have curtains and fill the arena up.”

With this year’s event complete, all eyes now turn to the Trojans first game in just a few weeks.

“Looking forward to a brand new team, getting started with a new season and we know that our Trojan fans will come out and support us,” Rigby said. “You mean so much to us; we’ll see you in Trojan Arena.”

The game will be an exhibition on Oct. 27 in Trojan Arena against Tuskegee.
