{"id":1169,"date":"2021-06-02T21:38:47","date_gmt":"2021-06-02T21:38:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.troy.edu\/trojanvision\/?p=1169"},"modified":"2021-06-02T21:38:49","modified_gmt":"2021-06-02T21:38:49","slug":"troy-university-honors-the-legacy-of-trustee-lamar-higgins-in-memorial-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.troy.edu\/trojanvision\/2021\/06\/02\/troy-university-honors-the-legacy-of-trustee-lamar-higgins-in-memorial-service\/","title":{"rendered":"Troy University honors the legacy of Trustee Lamar Higgins in memorial service."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/troy.edu\">Troy University<\/a> took time to remember a man who broke barriers as a student and continued to serve his alma mater until<a href=\"https:\/\/today.troy.edu\/news\/troy-university-alumnus-trustee-lamar-p-higgins-remembered-as-a-trailblazer-servant-leader\/\"> his death earlier this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The university held a memorial service for Lamar Higgins on Friday, May 28th in the Claudia Crosby theater. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Higgins was the first African-American Student Government President in Troy University history. He went on to become the first African-American on TROY&#8217;s Board of Trustees when he was selected to serve in 1996. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;What has been created at <a href=\"http:\/\/troy.edu\">TROY<\/a> is a great tribute to him because it&#8217;s a wonderful wonderfully diverse population but people understand there&#8217;s one TROY,&#8221; says TROY Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr.  &#8220;I think the manifestation of his work and influence is seen throughout our student population.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to words from family and friends at the memorial, Higgins was recognized by his fraternity for his contributions to the organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Without Lamar P.
