{"id":1556,"date":"2021-08-25T19:31:16","date_gmt":"2021-08-25T19:31:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.troy.edu\/trojanvision\/?p=1556"},"modified":"2021-08-25T19:31:18","modified_gmt":"2021-08-25T19:31:18","slug":"hydroponic-garden-grows-fresh-vegetables-in-troy-university-library","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.troy.edu\/trojanvision\/2021\/08\/25\/hydroponic-garden-grows-fresh-vegetables-in-troy-university-library\/","title":{"rendered":"Hydroponic garden grows fresh vegetables in Troy University Library."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A library is not usually a place you would expect to get your hands on some freshly grown vegetables, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.troy.edu\/libraries\/\">Troy University&#8217;s Library<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.troy.edu\/academics\/academic-resources\/center-student-success\/office-of-civic-engagement\/\">Office of Civic Engagement<\/a> have partnered to feed students in a new way by using hydroponics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;A few months ago I found a hydroponic farm in one of the library catalogs,&#8221; says Dean of Library Services Dr. Chris Shaffer. &#8220;I thought it would be a good potential outreach project for the library to teach student some more about healthy eating and where food comes from.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hydroponic farm uses nutrient based water filtered through plastic tubes instead of soil to grow the plants. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first harvest from the farm was lettuce that was handed out to students to take home for meals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The harvest also included recipes for students to prepare, a cheaper alternative to going out according to Shaffer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve got recipes and ideas of what student can do with it,&#8221; says Shaffer. &#8220;Quite often if you are cooking for yourself it is a lot cheaper than if you were going out.
