TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION<\/a>) \u2014 While the TROY football team was taking on the Wildcats in Kansas, another kind of football was played on home turf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gentleman of Troy Rugby Football Club faced off against Gwinnett Lions on Saturday. Troy University Rugby has had a long history on campus but as it is an amateur team that is not directly supported by the university, it has had its ups and downs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Founded in 2010 with a group of about 10 to 20 guys,” said former club president Eric Miller. “There was a handful of them that knew how to play rugby. The majority of them didn’t and there’s a few guys that just had some interest in getting the club started. It grew to a point while I was here and then it kind of slacked off a little bit. The current team and the leaders of it are doing a better job of getting involved in some tournaments and growing the the current team back to where we had it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal isn’t just about the product on the field. The club aims to foster friendships and a brotherhood among players. That is why the team holds an annual alumni game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’ve got friends for life and I always know that there is a fraternity in rugby,” said alumnus Michael Stopak. “Even if I didn’t play with someone at a particular time, I know that we’re brothers because we both played for Troy rugby.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Troy University rugby is looking for new members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We have an Instagram page @troytrojansrugby,” said Rugby Club President Jasean Parris. “You can text that page, you can direct message one of us or you can always come to me.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Troy Rugby’s next home game is against Ole Miss on the Banfield on Sep. 23rd.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
