TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION<\/a>) \u2014 The John M. Long School of Music<\/a> hosted a Nostalgia Dance to dive back into the age of Jazz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is a concert that\u2019s different than we\u2019ve typically done,\u201d said Director of Jazz Studies Dr. Dave Camwell. \u201cThis is a concert that is designed for people to dance to, featuring music from the 1930s and \u201840s, which is the social music of that time and was designed for dancing not sitting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People of all ages were able to socialize, learn some new moves, and even dance in front of a live band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This was a great opportunity for them to get out of their homework, get out of their study, and come and have a really great time and enjoy some nostalgic big band music, dance with each other, mingle, eat some good food, and just hang out and have a good time,” said Lecturer of Voice Brenda Jean Hamilton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe musicians on stage get to see the crowd interacting with music that we\u2019re creating and, of course, the dancers react to the music on stage,\u201d Camwell said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI love the people of different ages dancing and having a good time,\u201d said student and Jazz Ensemble member Doc Taylor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dance served as a way for TROY’s Jazz Ensemble and vocal studio to showcase their talent by going back to their roots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“So much of the tradition of jazz band comes from the 1930s and \u201840s where jazz was sort of the social music of the day,” Camwell said. \u201cIt\u2019s such an important part of the heritage of jazz, and it\u2019s still really fun. I wanted to give the students an opportunity to play this music, and the audience really reacts very positively. Everybody loves to dance and move and experience the joy of physical emotion to music.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Camwell said they hope to make the Nostalgia Dance an annual event.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
