TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION<\/a>) \u2014 You’ve probably seen puppets before, but none quite like Little Amal<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

12-foot tall puppet, Amal, has journeyed across the globe to raise awareness about refugee children. One of her latest stops was in Montgomery where, according to one of Little Amal’s team members, many people can relate to Amal’s perseverance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The message of Amal, which is hope, triumphing through difficult periods,” said Associate Artistic Director Khadijat Oseni. “There were lots of people that were displaced in Montgomery that faced violence in Montgomery. They had to migrate to find a better life and there’s just a through line of the Civil Rights Movement.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the United Nations Refugee Agency<\/a>, in 2022, among 108 million refugees who fled their home countries, 43 million were children under the age of 18.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

“One of our producers, David Lan<\/a>, actually explored this narrative of wanting to investigate the long journeys that refugees have to take,” Oseni explained. “He worked on a play that was called ‘The Jungle’ and Amal was a child character in that play. From the response of how theater was able to engage people in a different type of conversation surrounding this crisis, he wanted to further extend that and see how we can make it more interactive and more of a visceral reaction when people are in the presence of many that are often looked down upon.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
