(<a href=\"https:\/\/today.troy.edu\/trojanvision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TROJANVISION<\/a>) \u2014 In collaboration with Greek Week, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redcross.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Red Cross<\/a> hosted a blood drive inside the Trojan Center ballrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe goal for today is to meet the critical need we have for blood,\u201d said technician Melody Lane. \u201cEvery day there\u2019s accidents. We just need that influx of blood to help with tragedies and regular sickness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the American Red Cross, the need for blood is much higher than many people might realize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is a blood shortage, and what that means to you if you or your family goes to the hospital, you might have a family member or a friend who\u2019s in need, and we just don\u2019t have the blood to meet the demand,\u201d Lane explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lane stressed the importance of donating if you\u2019re able.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnyone who can or anyone who can try, we just need to meet that need. You may be a hero that saves someone\u2019s life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The American Red Cross encourages students to always be on the lookout for blood drives near them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redcrossblood.org\/donate-blood\/how-to-donate\/how-blood-donations-help\/blood-needs-blood-supply.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Facts About Blood Needs<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Every 2 seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood and or platelets.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Approximately 29,000 units of red blood cells are needed every day in the U. S.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nearly 5,000 units of platelets and 6.500 units of plasma are needed daily in the U.S.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>he average red blood cell transfusion is approximately 3 units<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 units of blood<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Blood and platelets cannot be manufactured; they can only come from volunteer donors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One donation can help save more than one life<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re always in a critical need,&#8221; Lane told TrojanVision. &#8220;Please, anytime the American Red Cross is near you, if you can support them, do that. We\u2019re an excellent organization and we\u2019re here to help. But we can\u2019t do what we need to do without donors like you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal set for this blood drive was to collect over 50 pints of blood, which was surpassed.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Red Cross&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redcrossblood.org\/give.html\/drive-results?zipSponsor=36081\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">website<\/a>, the organization plans to hold drives at Troy Regional Medical Center on Monday, April 29. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TROY, Ala.
