(<a href=\"https:\/\/today.troy.edu\/trojanvision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TROJANVISION<\/a>) \u2014 A new initiative is making it easier for first responders in Pike County to locate those in need; it\u2019s called <a href=\"https:\/\/what3words.com\/clip.apples.leap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">What3words<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just one more way to keep students a little bit safer,\u201d said George Beaudry, Chief of Police at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.troy.edu\/student-life-resources\/student-resources\/campus-safety\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Troy University Police Department<\/a> (TUPD).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What3words works by assigning a unique three-word combination to every 10 foot square area in the world. That way, responders know exactly where to go in the event of an emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you don\u2019t know what you\u2019re doing or where you are, you\u2019re able to still find yourself,\u201d said Dylan Mauldin, GIS manager at <a href=\"https:\/\/pikecounty911.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pike County Communications District<\/a>. \u201cYou\u2019re able to still tell people \u2018Hey, I\u2019m in trouble,\u2019 and they can get to you from there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Steps to using What3words are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open the What3words app.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tap your current location.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Read the three-word combination to the 911 operator.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>TUPD and Pike County collaborated to adopt this system. Both organizations say it is a great benefit to the community, especially for students who may not be familiar with the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/today.troy.edu\/trojanvision\/2024\/07\/10\/tupd-talks-student-safety-with-impact-parents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>KEEPING YOU SAFE: <\/strong>TUPD talks student safety with IMPACT parents<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnything that we can do to improve safety on and off campus just a little bit more, we\u2019re going to take advantage of that,\u201d Beaudry said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The What3words app is free to use.
