TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISON<\/a>) \u2014 Troy’s National Pan-Hellenic Council<\/a> (NPHC) hosted a guest speaker to help students learn more about voter registration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tuesday night, the NPHC hosted a Voter Summit, which aimed to encourage students to go out and vote. Guest speaker Khadidah Stone from Alabama Forward<\/a> answered students’ questions and provided voter information. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alabama Forward is a network that works to get citizens involved in the civic engagement process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dI just want people to feel empowered at the end of the day,\u201d Stone said. \u201dI\u2019ve actually been in this work since I was fourteen years old. My father got sentenced 60 years in prison for selling marijuana and so I took it upon myself to fight for his release and that actually happened while I was in college.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Part of Stone’s visit included reminding students that voters have the ability to promote change. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dWe all have individual power and it\u2019s up to us to be the change we want to be in the world,\u201d Stone told TrojanVision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ryan Carson was one of the students who attended the summit. Prior to attending the event, she was unaware of her voter registration status. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dI wanted to learn more about voting. I\u2019ve heard a little bit about it, but I haven\u2019t been too well informed and I thought this would be the right place to come,” Carson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the summit, Carson checked that she was good to go in November. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dWe had people come to my high school earlier this year and get people to vote but I was seventeen at the time, so I wanted to make sure that when I turned eighteen that I was able to vote and I was in the system,” Carson explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
