TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION<\/a>) \u2014 The arboretum<\/a> has received a $162,000 grant going to fund new educational and recreational improvements, making the area more accessible for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are very grateful for this and we will be using this money to improve not only things for students here, but for the community members who come out here and tourists passing through this area,\u201d said Dr. Alvin Diamond<\/a>, Biology Professor and Arboretum Director. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The grant comes from the Southeast Crescent Regional Commission<\/a>. Diamond says the main area facing restoration is Hickory Loop Nature Trail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Right now, a creek running through the area makes it hard and dangerous to navigate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to be using that money to put in two pedestrian bridges to cross the creek,\u201d Diamond said. \u201cThat way, we\u2019ll be able to access that area from the trials on this side of the arboretum.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new bridges will be wheelchair accessible. Diamond says without the money, these improvements wouldn\u2019t be possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is going to give us the money that we need to take on a really big job, something we haven\u2019t been able to with the resources we\u2019ve had thus far. It\u2019s another thing that draws people to Troy\u2019s campus. It\u2019ll be a positive, I think, for everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Due to storm damage that has impacted the area in recent years, organizers plan to clear around two miles of trail and connect them to existing trails. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
