In 2024, Trump would go on to win the state with 64% of the vote. Some Alabamians were glad to see history repeat itself.

“Trump is running on a stronger economy,” said Pike County resident Garrett Creech. “He’s running on border control, and he’s running on a stronger position as a world power. I think that if the people of the United States would rally around those principals instead of who is saying them, then I think that would be really unifying.”

In this election, many college students were first-time voters. Troy student Alyssa Walz said her vote was based on future economic stability.

ELECTION COVERAGE: Troy police enforce safety measures at city polling locations

“Honestly, one of the things that most concerns me is taxes,” said Walz. “That’s what is selfishly going to affect me in the next four years. I would also like to see more attention given to people who are in need, people who are struggling day by day to make it through.”

Creech says he planned to vote for Trump based on his policies, not the former president’s personality.

“I think that we’re really divided and I’d like to see us come together in unity,” Creech explained. “I feel like Trump is a divisive character, but I think his policies are really unifying.”

The Associated Press called the race in favor of Donald Trump after he crossed the threshold of 270 electoral votes in the early hours of Nov. 6.

To view AP’s full election results, click here.

TROY, Ala.
