(<a href=\"https:\/\/today.troy.edu\/trojanvision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TROJANVISION<\/a>) \u2014 As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes more advanced, some are concerned about how it will impact education at the collegiate level. However, some view things differently. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.troy.edu\/academics\/ai-forward\/artificial-intelligence.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The AI Forward Initiative<\/a> is one of Troy University&#8217;s newest innovations. It was made to encourage university faculty, staff, and students to embrace the rapidly-growing technology as a tool for students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One student from the imitative took it upon himself to research how AI could be used when producing outlines and drafts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;You want to do all the heavy outlining first without AI,&#8221; said student and lecturer Ryan Hardeman. &#8220;You can use AI to research and once that&#8217;s all done, you can use AI to draft together a remedial paper or essay.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hardeman&#8217;s ethical uses of AI include providing suggestions for improvement and refinement, generating ideas, producing templates, and summarizing and critiquing work. Despite the potential good AI could bring to education, Hardeman also discussed some of the pitfalls. Those include lack of personal voice, different responses across queries, limitations in context, and Blackbox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Blackbox is a term that means all the information we give the AI goes somewhere to be stored somewhere because it&#8217;s on a server,&#8221; Hardeman said. &#8220;That information is given to a Microsoft server somewhere and neither the university or students have access to it, so the term &#8216;Blackbox&#8217; means information that we can&#8217;t access.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/today.troy.edu\/trojanvision\/?s=artificial+intelligence&amp;submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>RELATED COVERAGE:<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/today.troy.edu\/trojanvision\/2023\/10\/24\/artificial-intelligence-prompts-troy-professors-to-create-new-policies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Artificial intelligence prompts TROY professors to create new policies<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/today.troy.edu\/trojanvision\/2024\/10\/23\/students-faculty-discuss-using-artificial-intelligence-in-the-classroom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Students, faculty discuss using artificial intelligence in the classroom<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of using AI as crutch, organizers hope students can realize their own academic potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;When it comes to AI and understanding it, the presentation kind of widened my perspective,&#8221; said Steven Hicks. &#8220;It&#8217;s not just something you can throw in a prompt to get a detailed outline. From that detailed outline, always double check because it may not be the correct information that you need.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I think that we are gifted in so many ways,&#8221; said Director of the Troy Campus Learning Center Rebecca Money Normans. &#8220;We need to use our intellectual gifts, but I&#8217;m hopeful because I see AI as a support technology for students who may need some help just getting started sometimes.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although many people may remain skeptical of AI in education, TROY is using it to educate the mind to think, the heart to feel, and the body to act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To find out how to get involved with The AI Forward Initiative, email rsnokes@troy.edu.
