According to a 2025 study done by the CDC, one in 31 children is diagnosed with autism in the United States. For Troy professor Jillian Camwell, autism awareness is something that hits very close to home.

“They want to love like every other child wants to be loved, they want to be treated like every other child wants to be treated,” said Camwell, the mother of an autistic child.

Camwell’s nine-year-old daughter, Rosie, was diagnosed with autism at two years old. Campbell says it is important to recognize these differences, especially in the classroom.

“Every single child and person with autism is different. Somebody might mask very well. We as a society can be flexible.

“Flexibility makes us better humans. It makes us empathetic. It makes us self-aware of how we treat others, not just autistic children, but a person who is walking down the hallway and we smile at them. That goes a long way.”

Camwell said she is grateful for the resources that have been provided to her child, and encouraged other parents with a child on the spectrum to take advantage of these programs as well.

]TROY, Ala.
