TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION<\/a>) \u2014 The first week of class has come to an end at Troy University with the community on full display.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each year, Taste of Troy invites students to the downtown square for live music, snow cones, cornhole, as well as a browse session inside of the IDEA Bank<\/a>. The event is meant for students to get to know some of the local restaurants and businesses. Javius Puit, this year’s Welcome Week<\/a> director, says the event benefits both the students and the businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It brings out traction to our downtown here in Troy,” Pruitt said. “What I’m really hoping to achieve is getting the kids out here to get very acclimated with the downtown so the new incoming students and interaction with the community can merge together.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

David Smith, the owner of Trojan Threads Apparel Co.<\/a>, says the Taste of Troy is an excellent opportunity for him to expand his business and reach a new customer base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“One of the important things for me is to always allow people to see who we really are,” Smith explained. “One thing is we are one block right off campus, so a lot of people just pass us, but having this event is very critical and just that exposure for our small business.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two Troy freshman said they were excited to explore their new city, not just because of the businesses themselves, but because of Troy’s atmosphere and sense of community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I think all the stores are pretty cute here,” said Olivia Cannon. Everybody’s been really nice that I’ve talked to, really friendly.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I really like the community feel of Troy and how all the students are really spirited, and they love being here, and so that makes me want to be here, too,” said Avery Foster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With almost another full week of Welcome Week festivities in store for Troy University, new and returning students have plenty of opportunities to find their place on and off campus.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
