TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION<\/a>) \u2014 As school shootings continue to happen across the country, talks of a potential shooter drill have surfaced in Troy’s administration.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Troy University Police Department<\/a> (TUPD) said that it has been talking to the school\u2019s leadership about a potential active shooter drill. However, what do students think about such a drill?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think it would be really beneficial for our school because it would really help us to be prepared for the real thing,\u201d said freshman Maliyah Richardson. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI feel like it would be good to have the campus prepared for something like that,\u201d said freshman Eli Walker. \u201cShootings happen anywhere and everywhere. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t say any place is too safe, so I feel like it would be good to have students and faculty prepared for a situation like a shooting.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Senior Anna McKnight, who was a bystander during a gunshot incident<\/a> on Troy’s campus, says that if elementary schools can have active shooter drills, so should colleges.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think it\u2019d be beneficial because even in elementary school, we had active shooter drills,\u201d McKnight said. \u201cShootings happen at colleges, too.\u00a0Florida State is what comes to my mind. I feel like it\u2019s very beneficial for us to be aware and prepared for that situation.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although some students think that holding an active shooter drill is a good idea, senior Garrett Harmon is skeptical.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think it\u2019d be smart to do a drill, but I feel like it would be difficult to get every single person to participate,\u201d Harmon said. \u201cI think back to when I was in the dorms, we had fire drills.\u00a0Sometimes the drills would happen while I was in class or out getting food. Not everyone was able to participate.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even though there is no timeline on the active shooter drill, students are still encouraged to follow run, hide, fight<\/a> if the situation arises. \u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
