(<a href=\"https:\/\/today.troy.edu\/trojanvision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TROJANVISION<\/a>) \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/hispanicheritagemonth.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Hispanic Heritage Month<\/a> began on Sept. 15 and celebrations at Troy are already in full swing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The occasion begins on the day that recognizes when Mexico declared its independence from Spain. One Troy student shared how her family celebrates their culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We just celebrate through food, of course, we like to do dances. We enjoy the Latin music that&#8217;s how we celebrate is through food and music,&#8221; student Sofia Valencia said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two Troy students explained why it&#8217;s important to celebrate and remember theirs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/today.troy.edu\/trojanvision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>NEWS FOR YOU: Students from around the world meet during ISCO game night<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Don&#8217;t be afraid of showing where you come from,&#8221; said Mexico-native, Jose Garcia. &#8220;We&#8217;re here in this country, we all celebrate this country, we are part of it, we contribute to it, but that doesn&#8217;t mean we should forget where we came from. I think it&#8217;s very important because it just keeps the culture alive, you know, it just gives him more knowledge and shows you where you come from, which is, I think to me, important to always remember.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although National Hispanic Heritage Month is not a traditional American holiday, some students said it is important to recognize others&#8217; backgrounds,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I think it&#8217;s an honor to just receive a month for people celebrating you. Wherever you started is how you got to where you are right now,&#8221; Garcia said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the celebration lasting only a month, Hispanic culture can be enjoyed year-round. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TROY, Ala.
