(<a href=\"https:\/\/today.troy.edu\/trojanvision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TROJANVISION<\/a>) \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.troy.edu\/academics\/colleges-schools\/college-science-engineering\/departments\/biological-environmental-sciences\/arboretum.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Troy University&#8217;s Arboretum<\/a> is beginning development of an on-site honeybee observation hive in collaboration with a local apiary, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/threesbees55\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Three\u2019s Bees<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s an attempt to create some buzz around the importance of honeybee protection. Soon the Arboretum will open a honeybee hive to teach students and the community about bees\u2019 role in nature and the dangers they face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMany pollinators are disappearing, and we depend on pollinators for most of the food that we eat so we\u2019re going to put this in to kind of boost awareness of pollinators and their importance and the problems that they\u2019re facing right now\u201d Arboretum Director Dr. Alvin Diamond said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most prominent threat to honeybees is pests and predators that kill and eat them, which is something often uncontrollable by man, but another major danger to the honeybee population is much more easily controlled and has already done damage to the population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cProbably the second highest threat to the honeybees is the pesticides that we use on our plants so we\u2019re going to try to maintain a low pesticide use around here,\u201d said owner of Three\u2019s Bees, Trey Ingram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/today.troy.edu\/trojanvision\/2025\/09\/10\/bugs-n-burgers-combines-cookout-with-creep-crawlies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>MORE FROM THE ARBORETUM: Bugs N\u2019 Burgers combines cookout with creepy crawlies<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;They\u2019ve really declined in numbers,&#8221; Diamond told TrojanVision. &#8220;60-70% of the honeybees have disappeared over the last say 14 years.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While pointing out the dangers of pesticides and protecting the honeybees from them is one of the Arboretum\u2019s main goals, it also places a heavy focus on educating the public on the importance of bees and why they must be taken care of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe goal is to provide a platform that we can bring people to and see for themselves that honeybees are very important and kind of get a better understanding of how a hive operates,\u201d Ingram said. \u201cA better understanding of what they do for our community and for our ecosystem.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ingram told TrojanVision they hope to have the observation hive operational around March 2026, right around the time that conditions are best for the pollinators.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TROY, Ala.
