TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION<\/a>) \u2014 On Tuesday, the Student Government Association<\/a> (SGA) passed resolution 70-001 to promote campus safety.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The resolution comes after weeks of increased conversations about how to keep Troy students, faculty, and staff safe.\u00a0SGA Executive Vice President Jayden McQueen said the resolution was prompted by concerns from Troy’s student body as well as Troy University Police Department’s safety measures that were proposed earlier in the semester.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe were asked what we planned to do about the events that happened in September regarding a shooting,\u201d McQueen said. \u201cOf course, the Troy University Police Department<\/a> are experts on the situation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have a strong partnership with them, and we believe their requests for security and safety features could help protect our students and help deter emergency situations.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The resolution includes suggestions like metal detectors, improved surveillance systems, and bag policies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese policies have been proven at other universities to increase safety and promote a positive event experience,\u201d McQueen said. \u201cProactive investment in safety measures demonstrates Troy University\u2019s commitment to the protection and comfort of all individuals attending campus events.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Troy University Police Chief George Beaudry, who has been a staunch supporter of updating Troy’s security measures<\/a>, is glad to see that progress is being made. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI truly appreciate that the student government association is taking a stand and trying to help push through some of these measures that we have discussed,\u201d Beaudry said. \u201cI think it\u2019s important that Troy\u2019s administration here\u2019s these things not just from me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI would appreciate it if we would consider swifter action and a timeline of how or what we are going to do to make campus a safer place.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is important to note that TUPD\u2019s recommended safety measures have not yet been implemented. Resolution 70-001 only formally recommends Troy\u2019s administration to consider those measures. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
