(<a href=\"http:\/\/today.troy.edu\/TROJANVISION\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TROJANVISION<\/a>) \u2014 The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.troy.edu\/academics\/colleges-schools\/college-arts-humanities\/departments\/world-languages-cultures\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Department of World Languages and Cultures<\/a> held the first event of its new Spanish Language Immersion Series. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The event, which consisted of coffee, snacks, and introductory conversation, took place in Wright Hall in the World Languages and Cultures office Wednesday. The goal was to get the students more comfortable in having full conversations in Spanish. According to Elijah Brooks, a senior Spanish student at Troy,\u00a0there is only so much you can learn from taking classes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEven just being in the classroom&nbsp;you\u2019re&nbsp;not going to fully grasp a language unless you practice outside of the classroom,\u201d Brooks said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Spanish language has many different regional dialects. Often, each individual Spanish-speaking country will have different preferred versions of words or slang. This can make learning to speak the language fluently more difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI speak a different Spanish, kind of,\u00a0than some of the other people in there so\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0just\u00a0good\u00a0to understand differences between people and get that exposure,&#8221; Brooks said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because of the importance of getting experiences not replicable in a classroom, many students&nbsp;in Troy\u2019s Spanish program had common complaints.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/today.troy.edu\/trojanvision\/2026\/01\/27\/troy-university-professor-to-spend-six-months-in-uganda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>INTERNATIONAL NEWS: Troy University professor to spend six months in Uganda<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA lot of the feedback that we have from students who want to practice\u00a0Spanish\u00a0is there are very limited opportunities here,&#8221; said Department of World Languages and Cultures Chair Kelly Suero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s\u00a0where the new series comes in:\u00a0it aims to give\u00a0students the opportunity to practice with their teachers and each\u00a0other throughout\u00a0the semester.\u00a0According to Suero, that practice can give students a leg up\u00a0post-graduation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRight off the job market, employers tend to give between\u00a0five\u00a0to\u00a020% of an increase, just for being bilingual,\u201d\u00a0Suero said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suero  believes speaking\u00a0more than one\u00a0language\u00a0does not just provide a professional advantage. There are social and cultural benefits as well.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne\u00a0in\u00a0five\u00a0people in the United States identifies as Latino or Hispanic,&#8221; Suero said. &#8220;There are\u00a042 million people\u00a0in the world who speak Spanish, at least as a second language.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0beneficial for you to learn the language.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anyone interested in furthering their Spanish is welcome to attend these events. You\u00a0do not have to be taking a Spanish course. However, there is not much English spoken at the events, so they recommend at least a basic understanding of the language.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TROY, Ala.
