TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION<\/a>) \u2014 Troy University’s Freshman Forum<\/a> is working to help the American Heart Association<\/a> (AHA) one step at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Saturday, the organization hosted a 5k run across campus. The AHA is the nation’s oldest and largest voluntary organization that is dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke, gaining support through volunteer events and charity runs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We just wanted to do something for the student body that was really fun, creative, outside the box, and while we were at it we wanted to raise money for a philanthropic cause, so we figured why not lets do it,” freshman Wyatt Harrison said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students, staff members and people outside of the university lined up in front of smith hall to begin their trek around campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Great turnout to today,” Harrison said. “I was pleasantly surprised with the turnout we had today.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the 5k could only had two winners, the real winners are the people assisted by the aha, with competitors having their hearts set for those in need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Back home at my church we had someone that we just got funding for the American Heart Association,” said runner Isaac Smitherman. “It really helped them and their family out when dealing with financial burden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It was always something I was really passionate about.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I think it means a lot to me, not just as a staff member, but also as a human,” said participant Jesse Joyce. “We live in a world, especially in a country that deals with obesity and constant heart problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Everybody’s families have been affected by heart disease, whether it be common heart attacks or anything like that. So you know, easiest five dollars I’ve ever spent.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
