(<a href=\"http:\/\/today.troy.edu\/TROJANVISION\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TROJANVISION<\/a>) \u2014 Women in the arts often go overlooked and unrecognized but last Tuesday the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.troy.edu\/student-life-resources\/arts-culture\/international-arts-center\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Arts Center<\/a> gave women the spotlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Love, grief, unity, family, and freedom were&nbsp;some of the themes found in the pieces performed in the IAC\u2019s music and poetry event.&nbsp;One major theme connected all the different pieces: they were created and performed by women.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have such a wonderful\u00a0university\u00a0and we have so many talented women on this campus, we could pick a different group of them every day to\u00a0honor\u00a0and I hope that we do I hope we all appreciate what we have here,&#8221; said First Lady Janice Hawkins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants&nbsp;took turns presenting poems and&nbsp;songs, all of them created by other women.&nbsp;One professor that presented a poem focused heavily on the background of the artist she was representing<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s&nbsp;a WWII survivor, she saw the horrors of war, so what I talked about was how easy it is for us to forget war and how the cleanup that takes place afterwards is one of the&nbsp;most simple&nbsp;things that we do but somebody has to do,\u201d&nbsp;said Professor of History, Margaret Gnoinska.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/today.troy.edu\/trojanvision\/2026\/03\/09\/beyond-the-crown-how-troy-ended-up-with-three-miss-troy-pageant-queens-on-its-campus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Beyond the Crown: How Troy ended up with three Miss Troy pageant queens on its campus<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hawkins hopes&nbsp;that&nbsp;by&nbsp;shining light on the unrecognized successes of other women, like those discussed by Gnoinska, younger girls will&nbsp;be inspired to make an impact too.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are not always&nbsp;celebrated,&nbsp;and I think sometimes it\u2019s more difficult for a woman to&nbsp;achieve&nbsp;at a certain level and we are celebrating the women we have that have&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;and&nbsp;that pass on&nbsp;that talent to our students,\u201d&nbsp;Hawkins said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although International Women\u2019s Day is over, women\u2019s history month continues and with it, the chance to acknowledge everything women have done for&nbsp;society.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSay thank you,&#8221; Hawkins said. If someone is passing something on to you and appreciating you, say thank you, tell them what a difference&nbsp;they\u2019ve&nbsp;made in your life and let them know how wonderful you think they are.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though the event is slightly different every year, the celebration of women by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.troy.edu\/academics\/colleges-schools\/college-arts-humanities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">College of Arts and Humanities<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.troy.edu\/academics\/colleges-schools\/college-arts-humanities\/departments\/john-m-long-school-music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">John M.
