(<a href=\"https:\/\/today.troy.edu\/trojanvision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TROJANVISION<\/a>) \u2014 Residents in Troy will soon get a behind-the-scenes look at how their local police department\u00a0operates.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Troy Police Department (TPD) is launching its first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo?fbid=1383823043787696&amp;set=a.246788927491119\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">citizen&#8217;s police academy<\/a>, a six-week program designed to give community members a better understanding of law enforcement operations. Police Chief <a href=\"https:\/\/today.troy.edu\/trojanvision\/2024\/10\/03\/danny-barron-sworn-in-as-troy-police-chief\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Danny Barron<\/a> said the goal of the academy is to increase transparency and strengthen relationships with the public.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want to be as transparent as we can,\u201d Barron said. \u201cWe want our citizens to understand what we do and why we do the things we sometimes do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/today.troy.edu\/trojanvision\/2023\/07\/27\/tupd-officers-use-high-tech-simulator-to-practice-de-escalation-tactics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>CHECK IT OUT: TUPD officers use high-tech simulator to practice de-escalation tactics<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I think in doing that, it helps our relationship with the citizens in our community.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The academy will teach participants about the different divisions within the department. Barron said several officers will speak during the sessions, including those from crime scene investigations, special\u00a0operations\u00a0and narcotics.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paige Ray is the\u00a0Television Production Coordinator at Troy University. Ray\u00a0comes from a law enforcement background and\u00a0plans to attend the academy\u00a0to gain a better understanding of how police operate behind the scenes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBeing a journalist, I\u2019ve gone to countless crime scenes,\u201d Ray said. \u201cI\u2019ve talked to several members of law enforcement, but the chance to see what they do behind the scenes is going to give me a better appreciation for the job.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBoth on a personal level and then also\u00a0teaching\u00a0students how to interact with officers.\u00a0This is an event that, I\u00a0think,\u00a0and hope will\u00a0benefit\u00a0me both personally and professionally.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of the\u00a0academy, participants will be tested using the\u00a0Troy University Police Department&#8217;s firearms\u00a0training\u00a0simulator.\u00a0The system uses a 180-degree screen to place participants in simulated real-life scenarios where they must make decisions while wearing a gun belt.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt puts people through real-life scenarios,\u201d Barron said. \u201cThey\u2019ll have to make real decisions, and it puts a little bit of stress on them, but it\u2019s safe and in a controlled environment.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/today.troy.edu\/trojanvision\/2026\/02\/26\/dont-hold-the-door-campus-police-give-dorm-safety-advice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>SAFETY NEWS: \u2018Don\u2019t hold the door:\u2019 Campus police give dorm safety advice<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;academy&nbsp;will begin&nbsp;March 26 at the Troy Municipal Courtroom. Sessions will be held every Thursday at&nbsp;six&nbsp;p.m. and will last about two hours through April 30.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Applications for the academy are currently full, but Barron said the department plans to offer&nbsp;additional&nbsp;sessions in the future.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TROY, Ala.
