TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION<\/a>) \u2014 Pike County Democrats<\/a>, along with the College Democrats of Troy<\/a> University, welcomed State Representative Phillip Ensler<\/a> to campus Monday evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ensler, a former public-school teacher and civil rights attorney, represents District 74 and is now running for lieutenant governor. During his visit, he outlined why he believes he is the right choice for the state\u2019s second-highest office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have a track record of service,\u201d Ensler said. \u201cAs a legislator, I\u2019ve delivered results ranging from public safety and gun violence to healthcare and mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe need people in office who are not just going to talk the talk, but can walk the walk. I look forward to continuing to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ensler spoke about his time in office, took questions from attendees, and met one-on-one with students and community members afterward. He also highlighted what he considers his proudest accomplishment as a state representative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe passed a ban on glock switches, which is a device that turns a handgun into a machine gun,\u201d Ensler said. \u201cPeople said that there was no way a Democrat in Alabama can pass gun legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI did that though by working across the aisle, working with law enforcement and community groups and I\u2019m really proud that we got that done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

College Democrats of Troy University President Markus Cooper, though from Georgia, said Ensler\u2019s approach stands out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis new youthful leadership is very refreshing to see,\u201d Cooper said. \u201cSeeing the level of accessibility and willingness to hear people out and meet them where they are is something that is very important.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although Alabama remains a predominantly Republican state, Ensler encouraged voters to support candidates who best represent their interests. The primary election for lieutenant governor will be held May 19.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
