TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION<\/a>) \u2014 Journalism and communication students had a chance to eat lunch and speak with an industry professional. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Troy University welcomed alumnus Ben Stanfield<\/a> and asked him to speak to the next generation of journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis place means everything to me, my wife, and our kids,\u201d said Ben Stanfield. \u201cWe love Troy, and to be able to come back and talk to folks who are about to get into the industry, I really cherish that opportunity and consider it a great honor and a privilege.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even students who do not plan to go into broadcasting said it was good to hear advice from a professional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It is good to hear from somebody who has so much experience, like Ben, who has over a decade of experience in the industry,\u201d said senior Caleb Thomas. \u201cEven though broadcast is not something I am expressly interested in, it is really good to hear his advice about being versatile and being able to do a ton of different things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stanfield hopes students take away how fast things change in the news industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I want you to consider that things change, and I want you to be able to adapt to that change,\u201d Stanfield said. \u201cI want you to be prepared for what is out there. The Hall School of Journalism and Communication<\/a> is doing a great job of getting folks ready for all aspects of the journalism world, but I just want to emphasize that this stuff comes at you fast, and to just be ready for it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stanfield also encouraged students to prioritize their life and family over their career, saying that everything else would fall into place. He also reminded students to save as much money as they can and to start a retirement plan so they can start to put money back.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
