{"id":9858,"date":"2026-04-09T20:38:31","date_gmt":"2026-04-09T20:38:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.troy.edu\/trojanvision\/?p=9858"},"modified":"2026-04-09T20:38:32","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T20:38:32","slug":"tpd-give-up-close-look-at-patrol-tactics-during-citizens-police-academy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.troy.edu\/trojanvision\/2026\/04\/09\/tpd-give-up-close-look-at-patrol-tactics-during-citizens-police-academy\/","title":{"rendered":"TPD give up-close look at patrol tactics during Citizen&#8217;s Police Academy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>TROY,\u00a0Ala, (<a href=\"https:\/\/today.troy.edu\/trojanvision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TROJANVISION<\/a>) \u2014 Residents got a closer look at how law enforcement handles real-world situations during the second session of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.troyal.gov\/police\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Troy Police Department<\/a>\u2019s (TPD) Citizens Police Academy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The session focused on patrol and corrections, giving attendees a hands-on introduction to some of the tools officers use in the field, including spike strips designed to stop vehicles.&nbsp;Captain Sanford Wingard demonstrated how the devices work,&nbsp;addressing&nbsp;a common misconception about their use.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat I showed was a tire that had been spiked,\u201d Wingard said. \u201cWhat I wanted to&nbsp;demonstrate&nbsp;was the way that the spikes are&nbsp;designed&nbsp;to work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMost people think that when a vehicle is spiked, the tires explode.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;actually&nbsp;designed to make the air leave the tire in a slow, controlled fashion.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The demonstration highlighted the department\u2019s emphasis on precision and safety when responding to potentially dangerous situations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/today.troy.edu\/trojanvision\/2026\/04\/01\/tpd-launches-first-session-of-new-citizens-police-academy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>ORIGINAL COVERAGE: TPD launches first session of new Citizen\u2019s Police Academy<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEverything that we do, we try to do it as safely as we can,\u201d Wingard said. \u201cWe try not to be reckless about anything because that\u2019s how people get hurt.
