Alabama archaeologist Ben Hoksbergen talks with In Focus host Carolyn Hutcheson about a prehistoric dugout canoe that was pulled from the Tennessee River in 1948. The canoe was displayed outside Cathedral Caverns, then gradually disintegrated, and remnants were lost. This is a History in Your Hands segment in a series with the Alabama Archaeological Society and is a cautionary tale about the mishandling of important artifacts. The dugout canoe was a rare aboriginal watercraft retrieved from the Tennessee River and only the second known canoe of its type from Alabama.
