Podcast: The Talk of Troy

This week on The Talk of TROY, a Troy University alumnus has filmed a new documentary chronicling the history of descendants of enslaved people illegally brought to Alabama on the last known slave ship, the Clotilda. Host Jared McBride has the story.

A Troy University graduate has been recognized as a national finalist in SPJ’s Mark of Excellence Awards. But the road to glory was surprisingly bumpy, as Producer Kameron Banks reports.
And as Host Jared McBride tells us, a professor on TROY’s Montgomery campus has been recognized with Gamma Beta Phi’s 2022 Teacher of the Year Award.

Troy University’s Rosa Parks Museum in Montgomery is celebrating Juneteenth, an annual recognition of the end of slavery in the United States. And although Juneteenth is usually on June 19th, the Museum is celebrating early, something they have been doing for a while as Kameron Banks reports.
And, as Host Jared McBride tells us, the Wiregrass Archives is a collection preserving history from the Wiregrass Region. And now, it has its own podcast, “It Came from the Archives.”

President Joe Biden recently visited Troy and the Lockheed Martin facility, which manufactures weapons for the war in Ukraine. Two Troy University students reported on the presidential visit for Trojanvision news and the campus newspaper. Producer Kameron Banks asked them what it was like to be in the press pool.
And, Professor Robbyn Taylor has served Troy’s Hall School of Journalism and Communication in a variety of roles over the years, and now, she’s becoming its director. Host Jared McBride has the story.

Falconry is an ancient sport, to which author and naturalist Sy Montgomery was introduced by a master falconer.  She talks with In Focus host Carolyn Hutcheson about that life-changing experience, which she chronicled in her latest book, “The Hawk’s Way, Encounters with Fierce Beauty.”

Troy University is known as Alabama’s international university, and it has some fitting landmarks to prove it, as Producer Garrett Sanders reports.
And, Diane Orlofsky is stepping down from her position as Troy University’s Director of Choirs after 16 years, but she is staying on staff in a new role at the John M. Long School of Music. Producer Jaelanne Thomas has the story.

Just in time for National Poetry Month, Troy University’s English Department and the honor society Sigma Tau Delta have hosted a poetry reading, where everyone is invited to participate. Troy Public Radio’s Adam Kennedy II read a poem and also reports!
And, TROY students aren’t the only ones celebrating National Poetry Month. As producer Conner Howell reports, a member of the University Administration won an award in a state-wide competition and was featured in a program that aired on Alabama Public Television.

A new memorial has been dedicated to Troy University Chief Academic Officer Fred Davis on the main campus, as Host Marissa Lacey reports.
And, two students on TROY’s Dothan campus earned honors in the inaugural Freedom Speaks competition, held on Martin Luther King Day. Producer Jaelanne Thomas reports.
