TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Residents of Central and Southeast Alabama will be seeing three new numbers on their phones as early as February 2026.
According to the North American Numbering Plan Administrator’s Numbering Resources Utilization Forecast, the 334 area code will run out of possible phone numbers by quarter three of 2026. On March 6, 2024, the Alabama Public Service Commission approved a new 483 area code to overlay with 334.
“Customers will have to go from dialing seven digits in the area code, to 10-digit dialing, which will be required once the overlay is implemented,” said an Alabama Public Service Commission (APSC) spokesman. “We’re in a permissive 7-digit dialing period now.”

No changes will have to be made by residents who currently have a 334 area code until 7-digit dialing is no longer available. According to the APSC, implementation timeline permissive dialing will end on Jan. 23, 2026 and 10-digit dialing will be mandatory.
The earliest date that 483 area codes could be issued is Feb. 23, 2026. The 334 area code will be the third area code in the state to be assigned an overlaying code, the other codes that are overlayed are 256/938 and 205/659.
