TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Over the weekend, people across Pike County celebrated the Troy Trojans’ win over rival South Alabama, but an afterparty soon took a deadly turn.
According to Pike County Sheriff Russell Thomas, authorities responded to a 911 call at Hideaway Events early Sunday morning. The business is located along County Road 7755. When deputies arrived, they found a dead body by the door.
Nick Wright, a Troy student who had been to Hideaway before, was at the party when shots were fired.
“I heard two or three shots ring out inside of the party,” Wright said. “Everybody ran outside and I ran to my car that was parked right by the woods. Fifteen minutes later, after the police had cleared everyone, I left.”
In an article published by the Troy Messenger, Thomas said the sheriff’s office had been worried about Hideaway Events for some time. Thomas also said the establishment did not have a business license or liquor license.

Soon after, the owners of Hideaway Events weighed in on Thomas’ comments. In a post, the owners said Thomas’ words were “carefully chosen to discredit their business.”
TrojanVision reached out to both Thomas and Hideaway Events for their sides of the story, but the owners declined saying Thomas’s comments achieved his “intended purposes,” while the sheriff was said to be out of town for the next few days.
Meanwhile, Wright says the shooting has changed his mind about going to parties.
“It makes me think twice about going out,” Wright told TrojanVision. “It makes me more aware of my surroundings.
At last report, the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities are asking anyone with information to call (334) 566-4347.
It is worth noting that authorities believe people from Mobile, Dothan, and Birmingham were present during the shooting as well as locals.
