TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Wednesday was the first day of class at Troy University and although the spring semester usually marks students’ return, some students are beginning their very first semester at college.
One first-semester student, Hannah Chappell, said her first college class experience was more welcoming than she expected.
“Everybody was really nice and the professor was really nice and I kind of talked to her a little bit,” Chappell said. “She had told us ways that she’ll help us with our studying and, you know, she knows that a lot of us are new so that meant a lot to me.”
Chappell said she is particularly excited for an aspect of college life she hasn’t yet had the chance to experience.
“Definitely the sports,” Chappell said. “I don’t do any sports anymore, but I can’t wait to go to the games.”

Aside from new experiences and activities, many students are choosing to focus on self-improvement.
“I’m looking forward to fulfilling my goals of maintaining a 4.0 and doing good in my classes, meeting new people and getting back into more clubs,” said second-semester freshman, Alex Barett.
He also hopes to improve upon some of his personal challenges from last semester.
“Overworking myself, feeling like burnt out and putting too much on myself,” Barett said. “And I feel like the way I can like manage that is just taking breaks here and there, or just you, know, walking around, or go workout, or go do something I enjoy.”
Another student, RJ Shamberger, is taking this semester to focus on growing his abilities on the football field, on top of his work in the classroom. One way he is doing that is by surrounding himself with support.
“It feels great man, I’m blessed to have some people that love me, some coaches that love me, and my teammates that love me,” Shamberger said. “I’m looking for a big spring on the field and trying to get me a spot [on the football team] during the fall.”
