Guest guitarist brings Latin American and Spanish music to Troy

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Tuesday night, classical guitarist Pablo Garibay performed at Sorrell Chapel.

Garibay was invited to perform thanks to the University’s effort to bring more artists to Troy.

“We had an opportunity, there’s this great international artist on tour and he was in our area so we were able to get him to come to our university and get him to perform for the students,” said Dr. Robert Gibson, Professor of Music.

Garibay explained the reasoning behind the pieces he chose, which included four pieces by Latin American and Spanish composers.

“I like this repertoire for the guitar because it’s a very good idea of what Latin American and classical guitar composers are,” Garibay said. “The one from Spain is very important in guitar literature.”

Gibson and Garibay both stress the importance of classical guitar.

“It’s my goal to share the art of classical guitar with my students and with the community,” Gibson said.

“It’s an instrument that I really like,” Garibay told TrojanVision. “I like its sounds, its colors, its textures and I really enjoy playing this repertoire. I think it’s very easy to have a guitar and the people, especially kids will learn music through guitar, which is healthy.”
