Troy University students got a taste of what it is like to live in poverty as the Office of Civic Engagement held a poverty simulation to allow students to experience financial struggles first hand.
Civic Engagement periodically hosts a poverty simulation to teach students the reality of what it’s like to live life in a position of poverty.
The student participants were challenged with real life scenarios such as limited budgets evictions and crime.
“We feel that it’s important for our students at TROY to have this experience,” says Coordinator of Civic Engagement Lauren Cochran. “The poverty simulation walks them through a full month in poverty. They are provided a scenario and they have a role as a family member. They experience what it would be like to live week to week, paycheck to paycheck, we feel that this is a real-life experience.”
