Incoming freshmen meet TROY’s student groups

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — As TROY welcomes incoming freshmen, some may need help transitioning into college life and finding groups they can join.

IMPACT gives incoming students the opportunity to see what TROY offers.

Incoming freshman start their journey at TROY with IMPACT New Student Orientation. Sarah Jane Patterson is one of those incoming freshmen.

“I have great leaders and I’ve met people in my group, I’ve met people outside of my group and they’ve all just been really kind,” Patterson said. “Everyone here is just super excited to start college. I’m excited about meeting new people, I’ve always been like a outgoing person and I’ve always liked meeting new people and figuring out what everyone’s interests are.”

All undergraduate students are required to attend summer orientation. IMPACT is designed to prepare students for the Fall semester and help students transition into college.

“I really liked the environment around here, campus is really nice, and it’s also not too far from home so I can still visit on the weekends if I want,” said IMPACT student Derek Santiago. “It’s great information you know they’re helping us prepare for what’s to come in a month.”

IMPACT includes browse sessions that allow new students to connect with student organizations.

“As Welcome Week Committee we really just want to get all students here on campus involved and its a great way to meet new people here on campus,” said Welcome Week Committee Member Zara Smith. “No matter what organizations they’re apart of and if they’re incoming freshmen, just to meet people here already on campus.”

IMPACT leaders say students should get involved on campus so they can make friends and develop new skills. Troy University has over 150 student organizations to choose from. All students must do is find one that interests them.

“TROY has so many different opportunities and so Welcome Week will also get to broadcast those organizations here as well, just so everyone gets to meet everyone so that they know all the different possibilities that they can be apart of here on Troy’s campus,” Smith explained.
