What first-time Pike County voters need to know before heading to the polls

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Election Day is upon us and voters in the Pike County area have a few things they need to know before going to the polls.

Pike County residents won’t just be voting for state and national positions on Tuesday, but also for local positions. The Alabama Secretary of State offers a sample ballet on its website where voters can view all the names of the candidates and the positions they are running for.

Troy University’s Office of Civic Engagement has been hard at work throughout the semester preparing students for election day. The past few weeks have been filled with voter registration tables and events meant to encourage students to get involved in the voting process.

“We just want to provide an outlet that reminds students that this is your right now that you turn 18,” Office of Civic Engagement worker Jayden McQueen said. “You’re an adult now, this is your right and this is how you can exercise your right to vote or you can be an active participant in politics and citizenship in our country.”

McQueen believes preparation is key for voting.

“You need to be registered to vote that’s gonna be your first step. Next I would tell you to do your research, know who you are as a person, and what you value. Then look at the candidates, unbiased sources, and nonpartisan information that is the truth and then you can analyze that and let that guide you in this process.”

There are specific items you will need in order to vote including a drivers license or other registered photo ID in the state of Alabama.

Voting precincts will be open Tuesday. Nov. 5 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

There are up to 35 voting centers scattered around Pike County. The full list of locations can be found at pikecountyboardofregistrars.com
