City of Troy, Troy University observes Veterans Day

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Every year, America stops to honor and observe Veterans Day.

Veterans Day is recognized on the eleventh day of the eleventh month at the eleventh hour to coincide with the end of World War I. Throughout the day, veterans are recognized during hundreds of ceremonies nationwide.

For veterans, it can be a time to reflect on their service and the impact it had on those around them.

“This day is pretty important because you can remember those who gave everything,” said Christopher Turner, an U.S. Air Force veteran. “It also centers yourself from what you used to do as a service member, and what others did. You can usually find other veterans that day that are celebrating. It’s just good to center yourself and it’s a good day to remember the fallen.”

Troy has multiple ways of honoring and giving back to veterans. Bicentennial Park has the Parade of Flags. Each flag at the park represents a fallen soldier from Pike County. On campus, TROY for Troops helps veterans continue their education and, sometimes, find work at Troy University post-service.

“I went there and I was like ‘Hey, do you have any volunteer opportunities?’ and they were like ‘you can come work here if you want’,” said Charles Franklin, III, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. “The amount of information I’ve gotten in the three weeks I’ve worked there has been astronomical, and I’ve helped fellow veterans who didn’t even know about Troy for Troops and helped them with their questions.”

Although Veterans Day has come and gone, the city of Troy and Troy University continues to honor and support those who fought for our freedom.
