Tips for keeping your kids safe while swimming this summer

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Each summer many families begin seeking ways to keep cool. One of the most popular tactics? Swimming.

“We love coming to the pool, especially on these hot Alabama summer days,” said parent Heather Lewis.

Lewis loves bringing her children to the pool, but how does she keep them safe?

“We never take our eyes off of our kids when we are at the pool just because anything can happen and it can happen in the blink of an eye. We’re putting them into swimming lessons. They’re two and three years old, but we feel that it is extremely important for them to learn to swim at a really young age.”

“We also use flotation devices because they are not able to swim yet. We really feel that it is important to have some kind of floatie or life vest on them at all times.”

According to Stanford Medicine, over 800 children die each year as a result of drowning. Drowning is also the leading cause of death in children ages one to four years old. That is why many experts urge parents to take proper precautions. In fact, there are safety measures you can take before even leaving your home.

“Have them blow bubbles, pour water over their head, and try not to keep it out of their eyes so they are scared of it later,” said Samantha Wilson, the Aquatics Coordinator at the Troy City Rec Center. “Bring them to the pool as often as you can, and swim with them to make sure they know it’s fun. “

With the average summer temperature in Alabama reaching the mid to high 90’s, learning how to enjoy water safely can help everyone be safe while having fun in the sun.

“We just like coming out here and it’s a fun, family-friendly atmosphere out here with the splash pad for the littles so it’s just a fun activity to keep our kids active,” Lewis said.

Whether it is at the beach or the pool, you and your family must understand basic water safety. Once you do, it is time to jump in.
