Months after a tornado swept through, Troy Parks and Rec is still recovering

TROY Ala. (TROJANVISION) — In March 2025, a tornado made its way through the city of Troy and the rest of Pike County, taking many buildings with it. One of those buildings was the Troy Parks and Recreation Center, which is still seeing repairs 5 months later.

“We’re hoping and crossing our fingers is two months. Maybe November is realistic, but there’s just so much detail that goes into the repairs and the renovations” said the city’s parks and recreation director, Dan Smith.

“It always takes longer than they want to say at first. You know, it was frustrating because we weren’t getting a lot of movement going. Before too long, we should have the people in doing the basketball gym floor. Once that is done, we will be able to have full go again” said facility manager, Dalton Fuller.

Smith and Fuller told Trojan Vision although the process of getting things going again has been less than ideal, they are thankful that it was only the facility that was damaged in the storm.

“But we’re just very blessed because we had over 200 people in this building when the tornado hit because we were a storm shelter” said Smith.

“Obviously, we were very fortunate that people were here and didn’t get hurt. Some of the people that were in the building, I think it bothered them a little bit that night. I mean, I talked, you know, I’ve talked to some of my co-workers and stuff and um it shook them up a little bit obviously. I mean, it I think it would anybody” said Fuller.

Right now, the basketball gym and the indoor walking track are still out of commission. However, the fitness and weight rooms, pools, and all outdoor facilities are open and fully operational. Troy Parks and Rec posts updates on its Facebook page.
