Students take on Polar Plunge, support Habitat for Humanity

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Over the weekend, Troy Pike Habitat for Humanity held a chilling fundraiser.

Students jumped into the forty degree water of the Troy Parks and Recreation to support the organization’s Polar Plunge.

Habitat for Humanity is a program that provides housing for low to moderate-income households. Those who are selected for the program put in “sweat equity” by building their own home as well as others.

Although the home is not free, buyers pay a reduced price with no interest. Habitat for Humanity fundraiser Dianna Lee shared what she wanted plungers to gain from the experience.

“I want them to understand that what they’re doing is fun, I hope,” Lee said. “It’s also for a very good cause.” Home ownership is something that is never guaranteed and for some people who are trying to get there, we can provide that conduit for them.”

Burnard Thomas, a senior criminal justice major from Detroit, Michigan, shared his experience plunging.

“Personally, I actually love cold plunges,” Thomas told TrojanVision. “I love everything about ice baths and the therapeutic values that they bring. For me, it was awesome. I loved it.”

Troy University Student Government Association (SGA) members also participated in the plunge.

“Take advantage of the time that you’re here at Troy to get involved with the community,” said student Jayden McQueen. “Whether it’s through an organization like Habitat for Humanity or joining a club. For example, Troy University’s Habitat for Humanity. You have been placed in this wonderful community, so why not take advantage to serve.”

Habitat for Humanity’s vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live. In Troy, the organization aims to build a new home every eighteen months, honoring their mission of bringing people together and building homes.

Within in the next six months, Troy Pike Habitat for Humanity will begin it’s twentieth build. To find out how to get involved, you can visit their Facebook page here.
