Trojan Spotlight: How the business ‘A Baller from The Ville’ came to life

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Not everyone knows that Troy has a space for students with small business to sell their products.

Student-Made Troy launched in the fall of 2024 and offers a storefront that features goods made by Troy students. Jamarion Willie-Hughes, sophomore electrical engineering major, is one of those students.

Willie-Hughes grew up playing basketball and says he’s always had an entrepreneurial spirit. During the COVID-19 pandemic, his mother inspired him to start his own business called “A Baller from The Ville.”

“A baller from the ville” means to never forget where you come from,” Willie-Hughes said. “I look up to my mom. She’s a full-time cleaning business owner. I was inspired by her in 2020, and I decided to take my own steps and create my own brand from it.”

Willie-Hughes’ new and reformed clothing brand, a segment of “A Baller From The Ville, is called KORE. The name might be different, but the goal is still the same.

“I decided to change my brand,” Willie-Hughes said. “It’s still tailored to my mission and my vision to never forget where you come from. Kore brings the authenticity out, it’s about staying true to your origins. That’s what Kore means to me, and I feel like everyone should know that.”

One thing’s for sure, never forgetting where you come from and sticking to a vision are at the top of Willie-Hughes’ mind. Gear inspired by “Baller From The Ville” and “Kore” can be found in the student made store.

Willie-Hughes’ is just one of many creators in student made pursuing their passion. To find Willie-Hughes’ clothing or any other student-made product, readers can visit studentmade.com for more information.
