TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Troy’s Psychology Club welcomed Dr. Jeffery Sandoz who spoke about alcohol addiction and recovery.
“The Iliad” and “Odyssey” metaphor that was chosen by students.
Kimberly Donaldson, lecturer of psychology and staff advisor of Philosophy Club explained further.
“With spring break coming up, we wanted a subject that had to do with substance abuse and recovery,” said Kimberly Donaldson, lecturer of psychology and staff advisor of Philosophy Club. “We reached out to him and he provided us with two different options and the students selected from there what they were interested in.”
“The Iliad” and the “Odyssey” metaphor was meant to make the subject matter more digestible to students.
“It made it a lot easier to understand,” explained Geo Gardner, vice president of Psychology Club. “Even for someone like me, I don’t understand substance abuse terminology that well.
“I think it’s great, especially since we don’t have all psychology majors in psych club, so it was great for everyone to understand what he was talking about.”

Throughout the webinar, Sandoz shared insight about the thought process of a person addicted to alcohol.
“The alcohol turns on them like a snake,” said Sandoz, a professor of psychology on Troy’s Dothan Campus. “The booze becomes an external coping mechanism and also the defects of characters that help him along that way.
“So the ego gets inflated and it’s not until life comes crashing down on the person, that they bottom out and that’s what ego inflation is about.”
Although the Iliad and the Odyssey metaphor was lighthearted, real alcohol addiction is not. If you or a loved one is struggling, click here for more information.
