TUPD holds Battle of the Badges Chili Cook-Off

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Tuesday afternoon marked the 3rd annual Battle of the Badges Chili Cook-Off held by the Troy University Police Department (TUPD) and local first responders.

This year’s cook-off saw the highest turnout of chili bringers since it began in 2024 with 12 different chilis to choose from.

It was also a way for students to meet those who protect and serve the community.

“We’ve got someone from almost every department here,” said Sgt. Rachel Farmer at TUPD. “I think what a lot of students don’t realize is that we all serve our students.

“It’s a way for them to come through, they taste the chili, and then they can talk with all of us.”

As students and staff at Troy were making their votes on the best chili, TUPD and first responders were making small talk, cracking jokes, and letting students get to know them.

“Those of us in here were trying to speak to the students on their way out, take a casual poll, and I do think it gives everybody an opportunity to see that we’re cutting up, we’re joking, we’re having fun,” said Chief George Beaudry at TUPD. “It’s not always about business, so things like this are important.”

Some students seemed to be drawn to the Texas-style chili with less beans or without beans.

“I’m a big meat fan when it comes to chili,” said Eli Wiesman, a senior cyber security major from Oneonta, Alabama. “I like to have a nice good flavor, really good seasoning, not too hot, about in the medium range.

“I don’t want the heat to overtake the taste of the chili.”

The final votes were counted and the classical chili by Chief Beaudry took the win. This was the second year Beaudry’s chili received top prize.

Speaking of prizes, businesses around Troy donated gifts for the winners. Larger prize baskets featured bookbags, cups, cooler bags, and gift cards for the top four winners. Smaller prizes included ground coffee and mugs.

Not only did students meet first responders, they were also given the chance to bring donations for the Trojan Pantry.
